James “Jim” Russell Rinkus, of Lakeville, MA died on July 9, 2015 at the age of 82, but his sense of humor and trademark stubbornness will not soon be forgotten.

He was born on November 11, 1932 in Sykesville, PA.  He was the only child of Clara (Weber) Rinkus Kengerski and John Rinkus, but he grew up among many cousins and had an especially close bond with his Uncle Jack Weber.

Affectionately know as “Rink” by his family and many friends, he was a Chemical Engineer by trade, and enjoyed a successful career as an executive for Polaroid Corporation.  Upon retirement, Jim pursued a life-long love for teaching, becoming a substitute teacher at Apponequet Regional High School.  He was described by many students as “the best sub”, but his children are still grateful they graduated before he started teaching.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting and proudly displayed his “trophies”, much to the dismay of his first wife of 44 years, Shirley (LaTonzea) Rinkus (9/16/1934 ~ 4/11/2001).

He found love and companionship with his second wife, Martha “Marty” (Schweizer) Rinkus, sharing 12 years together traveling and enjoying life.

He loved Penn State, the Pittsburgh Steelers, telling jokes, Black Jack, gardening, speaking his mind, Judge Judy, leftovers, 4-letter words, taking naps, beautiful women, and martinis.  Not necessarily in that order.

He hated Democrats, geese, and those who wore their hats at the dinner table. In that order.

He was the beloved father to Julie (husband Michael) St. Don and David (wife Sherri) Rinkus; both of Lakeville.

He took extreme pride in his brilliant grandchildren Sara and Hannah St. Don and Jakob Rinkus, also of Lakeville, who affectionately called him “Papa”.

In the last few years, Jim’s short-term memory loss and lack of mobility were getting the best of him.  In March he had a stroke that was the turning point in the decline of his health.  His feistiness and stubbornness had served him well throughout his life and even in his waning months, he was a model of strong will and sheer determination.  Heartfelt thanks go out to the compassionate and patient staff at Island Terrace Nursing Home in Lakeville who proved much more than comfort for Jim during his stay there.

Besides his wife, children and grandchildren, he is survived by his stepson Brian (wife Patricia) LaTonzea of Neenah, WI and Timothy (wife Deborah) LaTonzea, of  Columbus, OH, and the late Michael LaTonzea of Morgantown West Virginia, his four step grandchildren Mitchell, Sienna, Sam and Allysa LaTonzea, and many cousins and friends with deep roots in Pennsylvania.

Visitation will take place on Friday, July 17, 2015 from 5-8 PM in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 280 Bedford St., Lakeville, MA.

Funeral Services will be on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 10:00 AM in the Funeral Home, followed by burial at Sampson Cemetery, Bedford St., Lakeville.  A luncheon will follow at Lakeville Country Club, 44 Clear Pond Road, Lakeville.

Memorial donations may be made to Island Terrace Nursing Home / Activity Fund, 57 Long Point Road, Lakeville, MA 02347, or to a charity of your choice, or just toast him over a gin martini, dry, with and olive.
