Lars “GARY” Eliasson, 80, of West Bridgewater passed away on Wednesday August 23.  He is best known as the chef/owner of “Gary’s Restaurant.”   He was born in Sweden on May 6, 1937, the son of the late Verner and Ester Marie (Larsson) Eliasson.    He came to America arriving in New York City in 1955 at the young age of 18, aboard the Swedish East Asian liner MS Mongalore.

While in New York, he was the chef at the Stockholm Restaurant.   He made plans to return to Sweden via the SS Stockholm to visit his family.  Luckily, he changed his plans.  On the voyage he nearly took, the Stockholm collided with and sunk the Andrea Doria off NantucketHe served in the US Army from 1960 to 1962 as the ship’s cook.  This continued his passion for cooking while serving in the armed forces.   He remained in the Army reserves until 1966.

He eventually moved to Massachusetts in the early 1960’s because he had relatives living in North Easton.  Shortly after moving, he began his journey in the restaurant business by taking over the kitchen and dining room of the Hotel Bryant in downtown Brockton.   As he made a name for himself there, he was able to open his own restaurant at 450 Pleasant Street, Brockton a few years later.

Still yearning to expand his restaurant dream, he moved his successful business from Brockton to 115 South Main Street West Bridgewater in 1986.   He and his friends reconstructed this original 1850’s toll house to the building it still is today.   He created many wonderful memories there and had many loyal customers.

His interests included running, skiing and biking.  Gary ran over 8 marathons in various locations, his favorite being the Boston marathon.  He also participated in one of the first Pan Mass Challenges.  My father’s team raised the highest amount of donations that year for the Dana Farber Foundation.  Another one of his amazing accomplishments was to ride 1500 miles “Across America” in 15 days, once again raising donations for the Jimmy Fund.

Gary was also passionate about being involved in his community and politics.  He was a member of The Republican National Committee, The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department, National Rifle Association, Town of West Bridgewater Industrial Development Commission, a founding member of the West Bridgewater Business Association and a Mason at the Fellowship Lodge in Bridgewater.

Three of the greatest joys of Gary’s life were his Rottweiler’s.  If you knew Gary, you would know about the love he had for his dogs.  They went everywhere with him.  He is finally reunited with them and enjoying their company again.

Gary leaves his daughter Nina Eliasson Sousa and her husband Mario of West Bridgewater, and three granddaughters Lillia Eliasson-Parrott, Olivia Eliasson-Parrott, and Katarina Sousa.  He is also survived by relatives in Sweden, his brother Kurth Eliasson and his wife Maj, a brother Thore Eliasson and his wife Eva, a sister Ingrid Hanson, in addition to many cousins, nephews, and nieces both in Sweden and Massachusetts.

Gary's Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 900 Main St. Brockton, MA
