Music by The Piano Brothers

ORTELT, Alfred L. of Middleborough succumbed to COVID-19 on May 3, 2020, at the age of 78.  Al was the loving husband of Valarie (Tabeek) Ortelt, proud and devoted father of four children - Fred Tabeek (née Ortelt) of Whitman; Elaina Ortelt and fiancé Ed Borrelli of Rhode Island; Elisabeth Warren and husband Matthew of Middleborough; and Shelly Kane and husband Michael of Franklin - and adoring Grandpa of Charlie Warren and Frankie Kane. He leaves behind a brother, Ron Ortelt of New Bedford, and many caring in-laws, friends, and relatives. Al will also be remembered as a loyal comrade to his fellow veterans.

Al was a 1959 graduate of Middleborough High School. He was a proud Vietnam War veteran, having served in the United States Navy for six years.  He was very involved with the Middleborough VFW and was an active member of the Honor Guard as well as holding other various positions. He was also a member of the committee that established the Middleborough Veterans Memorial Park.  Al worked for the United States Postal Service in Bridgewater for 35 years as a postal clerk before retiring at the age of 71.

In addition, Al was a member of the Middleborough American Legion and the Mayflower Masonic Lodge.  He was also a Middleborough Youth Softball Coach for many years.

When he wasn’t at the VFW socializing with comrades, trying to win the 50/50 at meat raffles, or watching the Red Sox games, he could be found at one of the many local antique car shows during the summer.  Al enjoyed spending time with his dog and going on family vacations.  He loved and adored his family.  He will be in our hearts forever.

Due to current social restrictions, the memorial service is private with burial taking place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.  A celebration of Al’s life and military honor services will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Al’s name to the VFW Post 2188, 12 Station Street, Middleborough, MA 02346.

I remember being so happy for you, Val, when you started talking about meeting Al. Then, it seems like it happened in the blink of an eye, you and I were each married and each of us had four children! (Though I have to say, I was always so impressed that you raised twins!)
Although we haven't been able to get together often, I always think of you as my friend. I am profoundly sorry that Al has passed, but I am grateful that he got to see his children grown and then he got to embrace grandchildren. I am thinking of you and your family and sending you my best thoughts and prayers. Let's get together as soon as is safe.
