Joanne Marie (Hanberry) Martin, 73, resident of Carver, MA, returned to her heavenly home on August 28, 2020 after a courageous and nearly 20-year battle with cancer.  Her devotion to her family and friends, and her unwavering belief in God, supported her throughout her entire life.

Joanne was born to the late Donald and Noella Hanberry in Newburyport, MA on May 13, 1947 and grew up in Brockton, MA, graduating from St. Patrick High School.  She later attended the Andover Institute of Business in MA and Tarrant County Community College in Hurst, TX.  Joanne’s career began at Gilman Brothers in Dorchester and Whitman, MA, followed by work as an Accounting Technician at Naval Air Station (NAS) South Weymouth and NAS Dallas, TX.  Retiring in late 2019, Joanne served for 27 years as the parish bookkeeper for Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church in Carver, MA, where she also taught religious education classes for 35 years.

Joanne was an avid reader, loved traveling and playing word games, and thoroughly enjoyed visiting the homebound.  She particularly enjoyed and was well-known for talking with and motivating people who had been diagnosed with cancer, inspiring them to maintain the positive attitude she so beautifully demonstrated throughout her illness.  Joanne’s motto was “Expect a miracle, and act like you’ve got one.”  Joanne was a kind and loving woman of faith who left a lasting and loving impression on so many people.  She was often heard saying enthusiastically, “I just love people!”

She married the love of her life, the late Philip R. Martin Sr., in 1974 in Arlington, TX, with whom she raised three sons.  An adoring grandmother, she thrived off spending time with her two grandchildren.  Joanne was blessed with a large and loving family.  She is survived by her son Philip R. Martin II of Carver, MA; her son James D. Martin, his wife Julia and their children Ayden and Lea of Woodbridge, VA; her son Christopher H. Martin of Carver, MA; her brother Donald Hanberry of Charlottesville, VA; her sister Patricia Gately of Middleboro, MA, her sister Karen Gorich of Middleboro, MA; her sister Terri Ennis of Marshfield, MA; her sister Melanie Blood of Middleboro, MA; and many nieces and nephews, by whom she was lovingly known as “Crazy Aunt Joanne.”  She is preceded in death by her sister, Michele Tracey.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 from 4-7pm in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 280 Bedford St., Lakeville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for close family and friends at Our Lady of Lourdes in Carver on Wednesday, September 2nd at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of Joanne’s name to support cancer research and patient care at:  Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 or via www.dana-farber.org/gift.

My deepest condolences to you and your family at this most difficult. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. It was such a pleasure knowing Joanne. Joanne was their in my time of need when I lost Diane earlier this year. Even with all she was going through Joanne came to my home to say a rosary for Diane just before she passed. She truly was a special person and will always hold a special place in my heart. Rest in peace Joanne

I am so sorry to hear of Joanne's passing. She was such a lovely lady and will be much missed. I served with her as a lector. I also knew her grandmother Mary when I lived in W. Hanover. Her Uncle Joe was my first husband Tom Ingle's best friend in the American Legion. I am sure she is with the Lord.
