Joanne B. (Baldwin) Gates, age 76, wife of the late David L. Gates, passed away Wednesday February 3, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford following a brief illness due to Covid-19. Born Monday August 14, 1944 in Malden MA, Joanne was the daughter of the late George J. and Beulah P. (Ellis) Baldwin. Following her graduation from High School, Joanne attended the Brockton Beauty Academy of Brockton MA. Most recently Joanne lived in Rochester but was a former resident of Middleboro for over 50 years. Joanne was self-employed working side by side with her husband David and three of their children at Gates Cranberry. Joanne also gave of her time to various organizations. She was a Grower-Member of the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association for 51 years, along with the East Middleboro 4-H where she volunteered as Treasurer for many years and was co-chair with her husband David of the famous East Middleboro 4-H chicken BBQ over Labor Day weekend. When she was not working Joanne enjoyed, farming first above all, her family and friends, and attending events for her three granddaughters she is so proud of. Joanne loved to travel, she took countless trips to Nashville, the Bahamas, the Panama Canal, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and so many places all over the United States with David, her children and dearest friends. Joanne also had an artistic eye for colored art with pencils, a hobby she spent hundreds of hours mastering with her dear friend June Backgren. Together, Joanne and June thoroughly enjoyed dining out with her daughter Deidre. Joanne is survived by her loving children; Deirdre Gates of New Bedford, Dawn Gates-Allen and her husband Frederic Allen, Jr., Shane J. Gates and his wife Marianne Backgren-Gates, Barry E. Gates and his wife Mari Jeffery-Gates, her three treasured granddaughters Nicole B. Allen of Rochester, Mariah E. Allen-Woodward of Middleboro, Alixandria Gates of Middleboro, and several nieces and nephews. Joanne was predeceased by her brother George W. Baldwin formerly of Easton and her sister Margaret Baldwin-Gronlund formerly of East Bridgewater. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations in Joanne’s name be made to the, Cranberry Research Foundation 265 D South Meadow Road Plymouth, MA 02360.
