Agnes Martowska Obituary

MARTOWSKA, Agnes Pauline (Russis) of Lakeville passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at the Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility in New Bedford, MA, at the age of 91. Born in Cambridge on Tuesday, March 18, 1930, she was the daughter the late William and Agnes (Aideuis) Russis. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Anthony Paul Martowska to whom she was married for 49 years. She is predeceased by her brothers William Russis, Charles Russis, and Robert Russis as well as her son, Wayne Martowska, Sr. She is survived by her children Michael Martowska and his wife Maureen of Lakeville, David Martowska and his wife Donna of Foster, RI, Diane Martowska of Smithfield, RI, and Shirley Grindrod and her husband David of Lakeville. Agnes is also survived by her 13 grandchildren: Wayne Martowska, Jr. of Gardner, Christopher Martowska of Hillsborough, NC, Rachel Martowska of South Easton, Michelle Miceli of Mansfield, Matthew Martowska of Norwood, Dawn Watson of South Hadley, Derek Martowska of Cherry Hill, NJ, Dusty Martowska of Foster, RI, Aimee Deely of Smithfield, RI, Ben Roy of Swansea, SC, Sarah Salkeld of Chepachet, RI, Jessica Ollerhead of Lakeville, and Richard Grindrod of Lakeville. She is survived by her 21 great grandchildren.

Although Agnes started raising her family in Norwood, Lakeville became her home when, in 1961, the family bought a log cabin on Long Pond known as Hemlock Lodge from the family that built it. Agnes and her family would spend weekends there during the spring and fall seasons as well as the entire summer until Agnes moved there permanently in 1973. She loved tending her gardens, particularly those along the shoreline. Family was the most important thing to Agnes, and time with family was sure to put a smile on her face. Watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren play brought her great joy. The family loved it when Agnes would play her accordion at family gatherings.

Agnes enjoyed various activities throughout her life, from going on vacation with her daughter Shirley’s family to going out to play bingo. She enjoyed boat rides on Long Pond with her family as she trolled for fish. Agnes will always be remembered as a kind and loving mother and grandmother who gave so much of herself to make “family” her priority. She leaves many with fond memories of homemade bread, potato pancakes, warm fires in the fireplace, large summer family cookouts, polkas on her accordion, putting puzzles together on her porch overlooking Long Pond, and loving hugs that will be cemented for generations to come as a symbol of what life on Long Pond with her was like.

Visitation will be held on Friday November 12 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 280 Bedford Street, Lakeville, MA. A funeral mass of Christian burial will be held at St. John Neumann Church, 157 Middleboro Road (Route 18), Freetown, MA, on Saturday November 13, 2021, at 10:00AM.
