Alvin Medeiros, age 95, husband of the late Janet (Desjardins) Medeiros, passed away Thursday August 4, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, MA. Born on Tuesday May 10, 1927, in New Bedford, MA, Alvin was the son of the late Ernest and Julia (Cambria) Medeiros. He attended New Bedford High School and later would earn his GED. Alvin lived in New Bedford for many years before moving to Lakeville. He then moved to Deerfield Beach, FL, and most recently lived in East Freetown, MA. A proud United States Navy Veteran, Alvin served his country in WWII. Following his time in the service, he worked at Dartmouth Finishing Company in New Bedford, MA, as a cloth printer. While living in Florida Alvin worked as a bartender, then as a condominium manager before returning to Massachusetts. Alvin was a founding member of Youth Group and Couples Club at Out Lady of Fatima in New Bedford and was a member of the Printers Union. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, was an amateur carpenter, a trade he learned from his father Ernest, and loved to listen to music. His favorite song was “You are my Sunshine”. Alvin also enjoyed long car rides and discovering new places. Ft. Phoenix was a favorite destination of he and his wife Janet. There were also long walks and bike rides. Alvin was known to find alternate ways of doing and fixing things and was a member of St. John Neumann Church in East Freetown, MA.
Alvin is survived by his daughter Nancy Pequita and her husband David, son Ernest Medeiros and his wife Joanne Ricci, daughter Susan Turgeon and her husband Brian, son David Medeiros and significant other Kathy Roeselle, son William Medeiros and his wife Dawn, and daughter in law Cheryl Medeiros, twelve grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren soon to be twenty-one, one great great grandchild, several nieces and nephews, and his sister Dorothy Sousa and her husband Paul. Alvin was predeceased by his son Joel Medeiros, brothers Theophilio, Gabriel, and Ernest, and sisters Hilda Oliver and Mildred Breault.
A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00AM at St. John Neumann Catholic Church 157 Middleboro Road East Freetown, MA 02717, followed by a committal service in Assonet Burial Ground with a United States Navy honors service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Alvin’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
