Charles “Chip” Diggins passed away at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston on July 6th, 2023, with his daughter at his side after a long and courageous 3-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. He was the proud father of Emily Diggins of Lakeville.
Chip grew up in South Weymouth, MA with his five sisters. He went to EB Nevin School and then graduated from Weymouth South in 1979. After graduating high school, he attended Wentworth Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics. From 1979 to 1986 he also served in the Navy Reserves and then the Air National Guard until he was honorably discharged. He went on to have a successful career working for Air Energy and then Beacon Medaes where he worked as a Field Engineer. He loved his job, coworkers, and clients, and was heartbroken when he was forced to retire early due to his illness. He lived in Middleboro for over 35 years.
Chip identified as a pilot first and foremost and would often proclaim “it’s a great day for flying.” In the air was his favorite place to be and his second favorite place was hanging around Cranland Airport, helping others with their planes and offering advice to other pilots. He was president of EAA Chapter 62 at Fishers Field in Middleboro for many years. He loved to travel the world, both in his own plane and commercial, and he completed a trip in his Vans RV-6 from Massachusetts to Alaska and back in 2016, as well as a trip to Moab, Utah and back in 2019 with his daughter Emily. He was always in search of the next adventure and good buffalo wings. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and was very active at his church, Lifehouse Church in Middleboro. If it was mechanical, he could fix it. He was a handy DIYer and believed in doing everything himself. He was very knowledgeable on just about everything you can imagine and his advice on many various topics will be missed.
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his daughter’s fiancé Carl Reed; four sisters, Elizabeth Melvin of Rockland, Marianne Grant of North Carolina, Colleen Wilbur of Taunton, and Nancy Diggins of Sandwich; his nephews Matthew Logan of Hermiston, OR, Patrick Logan of Plymouth MA; his nieces Joann Santiago of Fairhaven, Kathy Melvin of Rockland, Pamela Talbot of Hanover, Rebecca Lindsey of San Diego, CA, and Kerry LaBerge of Unionville, CT; his beloved mutt Mickey, and too many friends to count. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles, and Dorothy (Coffin), his sister, Thessaly Barnett, and his beloved cousin Karen Coffin.
Visitation for Chip will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023, from 4:00–7:00PM, at Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home 280 Bedford Street Lakeville, MA 02347. Chip will be laid to rest at Friday July 14, 2023, at 10:00AM with a graveside service in Lakeview Cemetery on Pond Street in South Weymouth. There will also be a Celebration of Life Service for Chip on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at 6:00PM, at Lifehouse Church, 17 Jericho Way, Middleboro, MA 02346
