David Steven Fields, of Lakeville, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer on September 2, 2026. Born in Great Neck, Long Island to the late Ina Kass and Gerald Fields, Dave spent his youth playing outside 'til dark with his neighborhood friends and often topping it off with a treat from the Good Humor Ice Cream Truck. He spent high school nurturing an innate gift for all things relating to cars and mechanics that would serve him well throughout his life. Dave then made his way to Massachusetts, a move he liked to say was inspired by the wrong girl and completed by the right one. That right one was his wife, Lisa, and the life they built together became the center of everything he did.
Professionally, Dave built his career on hard work, sharp instincts, and an ability to connect with anyone. Initially, starting his career as a helicopter mechanic, before transitioning on to his first business ownership endeavor, as a partner in a commercial glass company. He ultimately closed out his working years by owning and operating a successful automotive tool business, named for the two people he was most proud of in this world: his children.
Like a true New Englander, Dave was kind but never soft about it. He was the guy who'd pull over without a second thought to help a stranger change a flat tire and still find a way to rib them about it the whole time. He had a gift for making people feel looked after and laughed at in the very same breath, and somehow it always landed as love.
He was a talented home cook, there was never a home project he felt he couldn't tackle, he was a devoted lover of scotch and cigars and was always down for a good time. He was also, famously, a people person in the most practical sense; Dave had a guy for everything, and if he didn't, he'd have one by the end of the week. It wasn't just about getting things done; it was about who he got to know along the way.
Saturday afternoons belonged to the back deck on Race Course Road, where Dave Matthews Band played through the speakers, the grill was always just about to get going, and the people who mattered most to him gathered close. Those afternoons were sacred, and they said everything about the life he chose to build.
He is survived by his loving wife Lisa; his son Jacob Fields and his wife Devon of Winthrop; his daughter Olivia Wright and her husband Alex of Stoughton; his brother Robert Fields and his wife Tamar of Northampton, and their children; his grandson Harrison Fields and two grandsons on the way, Jason Wright and Fitzgerald Fields; and his dog, Bailey, who Dave, in secret, flew roundtrip to Maine in one day to retrieve as a tiny puppy to ensure that no one could say 'no' once she was finally home.
Dave Fields will be remembered for his generosity, his humor, his loyalty, and his colorful language. He leaves behind a legacy built on good company, good cigars, and Saturday afternoons on the back deck that felt like they'd last forever.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, September 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Dalborg MacNevin Funeral Home, 280 Bedford Street, Lakeville, MA.
