Eleanor Reid Obituary

Eleanor Angus Reid, age 101, wife of the late Lyle M. Reid Jr, passed away May 21, 2022, at her home in Berkley, MA. Born in Jamestown, RI, on Thursday March 10, 1921, Eleanor was the daughter of the late Albert A. and Hulda R. (Swanson) Angus. Her goal was to live to be 100, which she did and then some. Her 100th birthday was celebrated with a very well attended “drive by” birthday parade at her home in Berkley, because of the pandemic. She was so very pleased and overwhelmed by the large turnout.

Ellie attended school in New York and Rhode Island. She graduated from the Nelson W. Aldrich High School in Warwick, RI, in 1939.

In 1939, Ellie moved with her family to North Dighton, MA. She worked for a time at Blackington Federal Products in Attleboro Falls, MA. Ellie went on to work at the BIG A, a drug store in downtown Taunton, MA. It was there that she met her husband of 34 years, Lyle. They were married on September 2, 1946.

Ellie lived in Raynham, MA, from 1946 – 2002. Moved back to North Dighton until 2019, and most recently lived in Berkley, MA.

Ellie was a school bus driver for 30 years, from 1961 – 1991, when she retired at the age of 70. During that time, she worked for Walter Williams, Gus Lopes, and the Raynham School Department. She also worked for years at the Raynham Drive-In, Chalet cinema, and the Meadowbrook Drive-In. After retirement, she worked several years at Ocean Spray in Middleboro as a cranberry sorter.

Ellie was a member of the North Raynham Congregational Church and most recently West Congregational Church in Taunton, MA. She was a member of the “knitwits” a social knitting group that met weekly in Lincoln Hall at her church.

Ellie loved to knit and crochet. She made 100’s of sweaters (many baby sweaters that are still around today), afghans for her children and grandchildren “helmet” liners for the military and lap robes that she donated to Hospice and the Brockton V.A. Her hands were always busy. She also liked to travel and was a “snowbird” wintering with her daughter Cindy in Florida for 17 years. Ellie was quite a “foodie” and enjoyed a “good story” on TV. She loved people and so enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was always a happy person with a positive attitude and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. She had a great sense of humor with her “Betty Rubble” laugh. She will be greatly missed by those that knew and loved her.

Ellie is survived by her son Lyle M. Reid III, son Alan B. Reid and his wife AnnMarie (Januse) Reid, daughter Paula Reid Andrews and her husband George Andrews, and daughter Cynthia E. Reid. Grandchildren Elisa Zanini, Bruce Reid, Kyle Bonefant and her husband Justin, Lyle M. Reid IV and his wife Jennifer, Wesley Reid and his wife Kimberly, and Rebecca Maderios and her husband Curtis. Ellie was the great-grandmother of Riley and Kaley Reid, Madelyn, Caroline and Jake Zanini, Emily, Chloe, and Caitlin Reid, C.J. Maderios and his wife Kyla, Kayla O’Brien and her husband Jerome, Colby Maderios and his fiancé Rachael D’Ellena, Camryn Whiffen and her husband Jackson. She was the great great-grandmother of Scarlett and Jerome IV (J.J.) O’Brien. Ellie is also survived by her cousins Barbara Boynton, Norma Shelton and Robert Angus, her sister-in-law Marilyn Angus, and many nieces and nephews. Ellie was predeceased by her son Randall S. Reid, brother Albert A. Angus Jr, Hubert Angus and his wife Gloria, Melvin Angus, and Richard Angus and his wife Carol.
