Elinor Stanwood Obituary

Elinor Grace (Gillogley) Stanwood, 95, of Middleboro, died peacefully on January 25, 2023, at Life Care Center of Plymouth after a period of failing health.

Elinor was born in Boston, MA to Thomas L. and Gracie L. (Hampton) Gillogley on December 29, 1927.  She was a 1945 graduate of Roxbury Memorial High School and 1947 graduate of Boston Clerical School. She often reminisced of early years spent with her cousin Phyllis, whom she shared good times in the city back in the day…going to theatres, museums, even once seeing jazz legend, Duke Ellington in concert.

Sharp as a tack well into her 90’s, Elinor was an inquisitive learner…always one to reach for the nearest almanac or encyclopedia to look up something she wanted to know more about. She enjoyed nostalgic game shows like Concentration and Match Game as well as today’s Jeopardy. There wasn’t a classic movie title she couldn’t recall. Dana Andrews was her favorite actor (she thought her husband George bore a resemblance), and she loved John Wayne and Betty Davis, too. She was especially fond of old westerns. Elinor enjoyed listening to all types of music, everything from classical violinist, André Rieu to country artists, Johnny Cash and Ricky Skaggs. She had a beautiful singing voice in church and to be serenaded with “happy birthday” from her over the phone was the best gift of all. Elinor enjoyed beach vacations, flower and vegetable gardening, canning home-grown veggies, playing mahjong and bingo. Her dogs were always close by. She believed it was the simple things in life that brought the most joy.

Above all, the blessing of family was what Elinor cherished most. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, George J. Stanwood. They were married in 1950, first lived in Stoughton and later moved to Easton, where together they happily raised five children. Retirement years were spent in Carver and lastly Oak Point in Middleboro. Elinor was the loving mother of Lynne J. and her husband Robert Leveille, Brenda L. and her husband Peter Moynihan, Thomas G. Stanwood and his partner Laurie Wynne, Ellie L. and her husband Walter Perry and Nancy A. and her husband Robert Bergquist. She proudly leaves behind a legacy of love, including 11 grandchildren: Thomas, Jennifer, Shannon, Peter, Laura, Sheena, Michelle, Michael, Traci, Luke and Zachary. Plus, 12 great-grandchildren: Wolfe, Gregory, Connor, Ethan, Sage, Willow, Graeme, Niall, Landon, Keith Jr. and Colton. She was predeceased by great-grandson, Dylan Levi Dator. Known for her welcome smile, kind heart and fashionable hats, Elinor will forever be remembered by the many lives she has touched.

A private family memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 1st at the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 280 Bedford Street, in Lakeville, followed by a Christian burial in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton, MA.
