Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" (Gurney) Hewins, 87, wife of the late Russell Hewins (who would sometimes call her Gert), and former husband Charles Haskell, passed away on Thursday, December 29, 2022, at the Sachem Center for Health and Rehabilitation in East Bridgewater, MA. Born June 20, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Grace (Bates) Gurney of West Bridgewater, MA. She and her sister, Ruth Wheeler, painted and wallpapered homes together for many years, often bringing grandchildren to work with her because they loved spending the time with her and had fun "helping out". Betty and Ruthy (and tagalong grandchildren) often visited with their other sisters on their breaks to have coffee and lunch, and to play cards and board games, such as Rumikub.

Betty loved bowling and was in a bowling league with her sisters and friends. She loved going to the casino and going on cruises. She loved being at the beach and being in the sun. She could often be found in a lounge chair with suntan lotion on, and on Friday nights she always had a pizza with a beer. She loved taking walks with anyone who would walk with her, or by herself if no one was around. Betty loved Boston sports, especially the Red Sox and the Patriots. She watched all the games she could, including being taken to a live Patriots vs. Colts game in Foxborough by her grandson in law. She would go to her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s Karate classes, soccer, baseball, football, and basketball games whenever she had the chance; and anytime she visited grandchildren they always knew there would be donuts involved. She loved company and entertaining, and she used to host Sunday dinner every week when her grandchildren were young. She also hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas for many years. When she wasn't doing the entertaining herself, she loved going to family gatherings and cookouts.

Betty was the sister of the late David and Robert Gurney, and Catherine Sigren. She is survived by her siblings - Ruth Wheeler, Herbert Gurney, and Charlene Walsh; her children - Linda McFarland and her late husband Thomas, Charles Haskell Jr and his wife Carol, and Michael Haskell and his former wife Wendy, and their half-sister Holly Haskell. Betty is also survived by her grandchildren - Arthur Celino and his wife Shannon, Anthony Celino and his wife Candace, Heather Laperriere and her husband Barry, Justin Haskell and his wife Jennifer, Tiffani McFarland, Nicholas Haskell and his significant other Cynthia Padilla, Kyle Haskell and his wife Chanel, Tabatha McFarland and her significant other Alfonso Figueroa, David Mendes, and Marie Mendes; including great-grandchildren - Fire, Gage, Caleb, Emily, Zachary, Chris, Francesca, Kaiden, Skilah, Emanuel, Justin Jr., Aiden, Abigail, Braiden, Korra, Tomi-Lynn, Michelle, Max, and Nathan. Along with her many loving nieces and nephews.
