Irene Ellen Freitas, age 83, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Morgan) Freitas, passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the Champion Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Brockton, MA, following a period of failing health. Irene was a longtime resident of Lakeville before moving to Middleboro and was a graduate of Middleboro High School. She and her sister-in-law Dot owned and ran Freitas Greenhouse on Vaughan Street in Lakeville. Irene also worked for the Hannah B Shaw Home, the Montgomery House, and Winthrop Atkins in Middleboro.
Irene loved to go out, and that could be shopping, going out to eat, traveling, vacationing, or a mixture of all four. She also had a big soft spot in her heart for animals. Irene was a member of the Ladies of Sodality at Sacred Heart Church in Middleboro where she attended church and belonged to the Ladies Red Hat Society.
Irene is survived by her nieces Barbara Leitos of Middleboro, Laurie Boutin and her husband Bob of Middleboro, and great great nieces and nephews Marissa, Kiley, Shannon, Gabrielle, and Antonio all of Middleboro. She was predeceased by her brothers Manuel Freitas, Francis Freitas, and sister Mary Baker.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023, at 10:00AM at Sacred Heart Church, 340 Center Street, Middleboro, MA 02346. Irene will be laid to rest with her parents at Saint Mary’s Cemetery following the funeral mass.
