Janet Cheney Obituary

Janet Edith Cheney, age 75, beloved wife of Dana M. Cheney for 53 years, passed away peacefully at her home in Middleboro on December 26, 2025, following a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. Born in New Haven, Connecticut on November 21, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Mary E. (Smith) Cove.

Janet was a dedicated educator who devoted her career to the Town of Weymouth, where she touched the lives of countless students throughout her teaching tenure in various grades, including kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and seventh and eighth grade science. She pursued her passion for education with fervor, earning a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Eastern Nazarene College, followed by a Master's Degree from Cambridge College.

A long-time resident of East Bridgewater, Janet and Dana moved to Oak Point in Middleboro in 2020. She was an active member of the Community Covenant Church in East Bridgewater, where she contributed her talents as a choir singer, directed Vacation Bible School, organized the children's choir "Covenant Kids," and generously volunteered her time to support various charitable endeavors, including Lynn Ministries.

Janet's spirit of giving extended beyond her community involvement; following her initial cancer diagnosis in 2001, she became a passionate advocate for cancer awareness and support. She founded "Janet's Ribbons of Hope," a project through which she handcrafted hair ribbons for sale at local craft fairs, with all proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society. Over the course of a decade, her efforts helped raise nearly $50,000 to assist those battling cancer. Her compassion also shone through her extreme couponing, which she initially undertook for her family and later transformed into a mission to support others in need by running an unofficial food pantry from her home.

Janet created a welcoming and warm environment, particularly during family gatherings and holidays, where her hospitality was always cherished by her loved ones. She is survived by her loving husband Dana, son Todd and his wife Karyn of Carver, son Zachary and his wife Brittany of Plymouth, and grandchildren Aubrey, Owen, Olivia, Addison, and Bryce. She is also survived by her siblings Carole MacKay of Virginia, Terry Lynn Humphrey and her husband David of South Carolina, and Mary Lou Babin and her husband Wayne of South Carolina, along with many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. Janet was predeceased by her sisters Frannye Crocker, Charlene Russell, and her brother Charles H. Cove Jr.
