Joseph A. McCarthy Jr. age 72, of Middleborough, loving husband of Nancy (McAlpin) McCarthy, passed away unexpectedly Thursday March 10, 2022, at St. Lukes Hospital in New Bedford, MA. He was the son of the late Joseph McCarthy Sr. and Jane (Toomey) McCarthy. Joe grew up in North Quincy and graduated from North Quincy High School, class of 1968. In 2004, Joe retired from the United States Postal Service where he worked as a letter carrier. Prior to his time with the postal service, Joe served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War serving on the USS Saratoga from 1968-1974 and then as a member of the Army National Guard from 1979-1982. A member of the Veterans of Foreign War, V.F.W. and the Blue Knights Motorcycle club, he also attended Sacred Heart Church in Middleborough. Joe was an avid NFL supporter, mostly for the Patriots. He loved to read, and was a Barrett Jackson and Mecum Auto Show enthusiast. Joe was constantly upgrading his first and only house, with the help of his lovely wife Nancy. He was caring, always willing to help, and made his family laugh. In addition to his wife Nancy, Joseph is survived by his son Brian Etro and his wife Sarah of Middleborough, grandchildren Mia Etro, and Bryce and Brady Brackett also of Middleborough . He was the brother of Barbara Baker and her husband Richard of Plymouth, Mike McCarthy and his wife Barbara of North Weymouth, and the brother in law of Jim Downey of North Quincy. Joe was the nephew of Anne (McCarthy) O’Halloran of Rocky Nook, Kingston. He was the brother in law of Jean and Jim Carroll of Hanover, Richard and Maria McAlpin of Rockland, Diane McAlpin and John Connolly of Abington. He was the life long friend of Don Tasselari. He also leaves many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  Joe was predeceased by his sisters Patricia Downey and Mary Jane Smith. Visiting hours for Joe will be held on Thursday March 17, 2022, from 4:00 – 7:00PM at Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home 280 Bedford Street Lakeville, MA 02347. A funeral mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday March 18, 2022, at 10:00AM at Sacred Heart Church 340 Center Street Middleboro, MA 02346. Joe will be laid to rest in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne following the funeral mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association by visiting their website at www.alz.org.
