Joseph Robert Minnix, 65, of Middleborough passed away on Friday, January 5, 2024, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Plymouth, MA after a long battle with metastatic prostate cancer. Joe began his life in Columbus, Georgia, returning for visits to connect with family over the years. He met his wife, Jan, when the Tall Ships were on exhibition in Boston for the Bicentennial in 1980, and they settled together in Massachusetts. Upon joining the U.S. Navy, Joe received a perfect score on the ASVAB aptitude test. He served aboard the USS John F. Kennedy CV-67 (aircraft carrier) as an Aviation Electronics Technician with the Fixed Wing Patrol Squadron 92 (VP-92). He was honorably discharged after further serving in the Navy Reserve for 18 years at NAS South Weymouth, MA.
Joe started his professional career at BL Makepeace Co. in Boston, moving on to Honeywell and Sypris Technologies. Eventually Joe transitioned into the pharmaceutical industry, beginning at Shire Human Genetic Therapies as a Metrology Calibration Supervisor. From there, he became a Director and established a world-class department. Shire was then purchased by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, and Joe transitioned into the position of Associate Director of Facilities Systems where he was responsible for multiple groups within the organization. He was a colleague and mentor to many, some of whom became his closest friends.
Known for his perfectionism and attention to detail, Joe applied these traits to all aspects of his life. He had a myriad of interests but most notably enjoyed fishing, sport shooting, hunting, photography, gardening, reading, and repairing electronic and mechanical devices for family and friends.
Joe was known as an avid fisherman: lakes, rivers, streams, and ocean. He fished anywhere he could, from his family’s vacation home on the Chattahoochee River in Eufaula, AL to the Florida Keys, the Cape Cod Canal, and the small ponds by his house. His local crew of surfcasters nicknamed him “Relentless” for his unwavering determination to catch the biggest stripers possible. Joe also spent many of his youthful years hunting from a tree stand and was a member of the Plymouth Rod and Gun Club.
Joe is survived by his loving wife Jan (Janet) of 38 years, son Ben and his wife and their children Isaac and Savannah, daughter April Hinnant and her husband Matt and their children and grandchildren in Columbus GA, sisters Esther and Marsha and her husband Ken, brothers-in-law Henry Jason and Joe Jason and his wife Karen, sisters-in-law Joan Jason and pre-deceased Lorraine Jason, loving niece Selbie Jason, nephews Bubba Coram and his wife Cindy and their children and grandchildren, Corey Hall and his wife Nichole and Jesse Jason. He was predeceased by his beloved parents Virginia Ruth and Milton (Ralph) Minnix and grandmother Memmaw (Nancy Powell).
Joe will be remembered as a loyal, courageous, stoic, and humble soul, and a man who loved his family and friends. He cared more about his friends than he could ever admit and cherished the times they spent with him. Joe loved to teach and share his skills with those willing to learn. Joe will be deeply missed by family and friends, and by Louie, his Bernese Mountain pup. Louie was his parting gift to his wife (Jan) and something for her to hold onto as time moves forward.
Honoring Joe’s wishes, in lieu of a formal service, a Celebration of Life along the Cape Cod Canal will occur in the spring of 2024. Please check back at this website for future details.
