Levi Martin Obituary

Levi Martin, age 17, formerly known to many as Emma, passed away suddenly at home in Lakeville, MA on Sunday, December 18, 2022.  Levi is the child of David and Kimi Martin.  He was born Emma Rachel Martin in Montgomery, Alabama on March 19, 2005.  Levi’s gender was intersex caused by Swyer Syndrome, meaning he presented as female at birth although he was genetically male. The result of this condition and resulting gender dysphoria came with a host of medical and mental issues. Combined with social stigma associated with being intersex, transgender, and gay, Levi suffered immeasurably until the constancy of that pain became unbearable.

His final message to us was full of grace, love, and forgiveness as well as expressions of the vast difficulties he faced, and he signed his name, Levi, which we deliberately use in his honor and ask that you do the same.

Levi is quirky, described as savagely smart, blunt, yet sensitive, with a dry sense of humor.  He also was a caring and loving sibling and friend, and greatly loved his nieces and nephews.

Levi is survived by his parents, Kimi (Turley) and David Martin; his siblings, Jenna (Martin) and Chris Mullen, Erica (Martin) and Spencer Ricks, Andrea (Martin) and Chris Wyss, Diana (Martin) and Duncan Larsen, Garrett Martin, Alyssa Martin and fiancé Will Harmelink; and his nieces and nephews, Landon, Mary Claire, Hannah, and Parker Mullen, Esther, Louisa, and Frederick Ricks,  Cora, Lucy, Eden, and Owen Wyss, and Willow Larsen.

There will be no public calling hours or wake. For family and dear friends, in-person funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home located at 280 Bedford Street, Lakeville, MA. Capacity is limited to about 130 people. For others, services will be available via live streaming on Zoom (a link will be shared via the Funeral Home website: https://www.d-mfh.com/ ). Services will be focused on remembrance and may touch upon sensitive subjects of suicide and LGBTQIA+ acceptance. Instead of calling hours, we will mingle with people before and after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Boston Children’s Hospital Trust in Levi Martin’s behalf. Click “other” under “Gift Designation” and type in “GEMS” (Gender Multi Specialty Services).
