Margarida S. Gomes, age 89, wife of the late Joao Gomes, passed away on Monday October 3, 2022, at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital, after a period of failing health over the past year. Born in Brava, Cape Verde, on Saturday December 3, 1932, Margarida was the daughter of the late Jose and Rosa (Gomes) Soares. She attended school in Cape Verde and lived in Senegal from 1962 – 1975 before coming to the United States and settling in Brockton, MA. Margarida was a forty-year member of St. John Baptista and St. Edith Stein Catholic Church, who loved to cook for her family and various church functions and devoted her life to helping family. She took an early retirement from the manufacturing company she worked for, to care for her late husband Joao who passed away from cancer in 2009.
Margarida is survived by her daughter Maria Almeida of Brockton, daughter Domingas Lomba and her husband Tony of Lakeville, son Jose A. Gomes of North Carolina, son Henri Gomes of Brockton, daughter Madeline Amado of Brockton and daughter Cecile Gomes of Brockton, grandchildren Antonio D. Lomba Jr, Sasha N. Lomba, Shari Almeida, Karine Almeida, Chantale Gomes, Henri Gomes Jr, Alyah Gomes, Serina Amado, Isiah Amado, Daniel Gomes Jr, and John M. Gomes, four great grandchildren Dominic M. Lomba, Antonio D. Lomba III, Natalie M. Lomba, and Aziyra Gomes, two brothers Daniel and Aguinald O. Soares, and daughter in law Merlita M. Gomes. Margarida was predeceased by her son Daniel Gomes and three brothers Carlos Soares, Joao Soares, and Fortunato Soares, and many cousins who passed away in the last few years.
Visiting hours for Margarida will be held on Thursday October 6, 2022, from 5:00 – 8:00PM at the George Lopes Funeral Home 647 Main Street, Brockton, MA 02301. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday October 7, 2022, at 12:30PM, at St. Edith Stein Catholic Church, 71 North Main Street Brockton, MA 02301. Interment will follow the funeral mass in Pine Hill Cemetery in West Bridgewater, MA.
