Newby spent his formative years in Louisiana, before leaving high school at the age of 17 to join the United States Navy. He proudly served his country for 20 years, before retiring as a Senior Chief.
During his time stationed in Virginia his life changed forever when he met a special nurse named Karen. They married in 1978, beginning their 41 years of wedded bliss. They enjoyed many adventures traveling with the Navy, eventually making Lakeville MA their final home. After retiring from the Navy, Newby worked as a mechanical technician with Ref-Fuel, later Covanta Company. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and telling a good joke. He particularly loved a nice cold beer, sunbathing by his pool or cruising on his pontoon boat enjoying the tranquility of Long Pond with his family and friends. He was also a creative cook. His family particularly loved his homemade beef jerky. For many years he was the proud caretaker of his community Veteran Cemetery.
