With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Rita (Donoghue) Cruz, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Rita passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 7, 2026, at the age of 75, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply.
Rita was born in Boston and grew up in Charlestown before moving to Weymouth, where she later graduated from Weymouth High School. After marrying her husband, Julio, they made their home in East Taunton, where they raised their family and built their life together.
Rita and her husband, Julio, shared more than 55 years together. Through all that life brought their way, they stood beside one another, raised their family, and shared a lifetime of memories. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on September 3.
Family was the center of Rita's life. She loved her children, Michael, Stephen, Lianne, and Michelle, with all her heart and was deeply proud of each of them. Their happiness and well-being always meant everything to her.
Her five grandchildren-Caroline, Kyle, Cameron, Austin, and Kiana-lovingly called her Nana and held a very special place in her heart. Being their Nana brought Rita tremendous joy and pride. She loved each of them deeply, treasured the time she spent with them, and took great happiness in watching them grow. The love she gave them and the memories they shared with their Nana will remain with them always.
Rita was also blessed with four siblings whom she loved dearly, a large extended family, and many lifelong friends. The friendships she carried with her through the years spoke to the kind of person Rita was-someone who loved deeply, cared deeply, and formed bonds that lasted a lifetime.
For many years, Rita faced a long and difficult battle with multiple sclerosis, meeting each challenge with extraordinary strength, courage, and determination. Even on her hardest days, she continued to think of others before herself, always wanting to make sure the people she loved were safe and cared for.
Rita will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.
Family and close friends are invited to attend a graveside service honoring Rita at Cedar Knoll Cemetery 175 Staples Street in East Taunton on Tuesday, September 22, at 10:00 a.m.
A celebration of Rita's life will follow at the Fireside in Middleboro.
For those wishing to honor Rita's memory, her family welcomes donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, a cause close to their hearts and a meaningful tribute to the strength and courage Rita showed throughout her long journey with MS.
