Stephen Kendrick Benson died unexpectedly but peacefully at his home in Raynham, MA, on January 16, 2026. He was eighty years old. Stephen was born on December 5, 1945, in Newton, MA to Carl K. and Eleanor Benson. He spent his early years in Abington, MA and moved with his family to Duxbury, MA in 1954. He graduated from Duxbury High School and joined the United States Army, serving in Germany. He worked for the American Telephone and Telegraph company for many years.
Stephen married Violet Horton in 1983. They lived in Easton MA, then moved to Raynham MA and lived comfortably for many years. They were avid walkers, enjoyed going out to eat weekly and spending time with family and friends.
Stephen liked to camp and hike in and around the White Mountains in New Hampshire and to kayak on the South Shore. He enjoyed family parties, especially the Swedish Christmas Eve celebrations of the Benson clan. Stephen was also a real Yankee, who delighted in a good bargain. He was a great reader and user of his local library and knew an enormous amount about a wide variety of subjects, including military history, politics, and sports, and he had definite opinions about all of them. One of his great pleasures was old movies, especially noir crime films from the 40's and 50's, the films of John Wayne and watching Lawrence Welk on Sunday nights. Stephen was original and often very funny. He will be sorely missed by those who knew him best. It will certainly not be the same without "Steve" at family gatherings and special events.
Stephen's wife and parents predeceased him, and he leaves two brothers, David and Bill, three nephews, stepson Todd Horton and his wife Danielle, their two children William and Elise and many cousins.
Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday January 31, 2026, starting at 1:00PM, at the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home 280 Bedford Street Lakeville, MA 02347. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 2:30PM to conclude services for Stephen.
