Steven Broadbent Obituary

Steven P. Broadbent, loving husband of the late Beth A. Broadbent, passed away on January 7, 2022, at the age of 71. Born to the late Robert (Sid) & Claire Broadbent, Steve grew up in Lakeville, MA and graduated from Apponequet Regional High School before joining the U.S. Navy in 1968. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1971 as a 3rd Class Petty Officer. Upon his return to the U.S., he met Beth and they married October 6, 1972, and started their life together in Middleboro MA, raising their two children Randy Broadbent of Middleboro and Nikkie Gaitan of Dedham MA.

After working for Chevrolet, Steve started his own business, “United Automotive Services” in 1982, an auto body shop in Lakeville, sharing a building with his father. Steve was a lifelong automotive enthusiast and specialized in building and restoring antique cars, many cars going on to win countless awards including his own cherished 1969 Camaro. After his father’s passing in 1994 he also stepped in to continue that business and run Sid’s Sheet Metal, specializing in custom sheet metal fabrication.

Since joining the Navy, Steve also became passionate about drag racing. He joined his brother Bob in 1968 to form Broadbent Brother’s Racing and spent the past 50 years building and racing seven different cars and later inviting his son, Randy to join the team. The entire family, but especially Randy and Bob, will treasure the fond memories of weekends spent at New England Dragway and Lebannon Valley Dragway with their extended racing family.

Throughout life, Steve and Beth often traveled all over the country to see the sights and visit family and friends. They enjoyed annual trips to Maine, visits to South Carolina, Florida, quick vacations to New Jersey and Arizona, cruises to Bermuda, as well as their trip of a lifetime in 2012 to California and Hawaii. However, it didn’t much matter where they were, they loved being together.

Steve very much enjoyed spending time with his wife Beth and his siblings, Robert Broadbent of Hampton, NH, the late Susan Zilonis of Lakeville, Michael Broadbent of Lakeville, and William Broadbent of Wareham, MA as well as his nieces and nephews. He loved his Saturday lunches with them all, which often turned into dinners- it was his favorite excuse to end his work week early.

Steve’s Sundays would often be spent with Beth, son Randy and his fiancé, Kerry Cook at the home of his daughter Nikkie and son-in-law, Jamie Gaitan, to enjoy time with his three grandchildren, Lola, Asher, and Noah who he adored. He loved playing board games and cards with them and sharing in the joy of watching them laugh and play with friends in the pool during the summer. We will forever miss his quiet, sarcastic humor and calming, reassuring presence.

Steve will be laid to rest with his beloved wife Beth in a private graveside service. A memorial and celebration of life will be planned later this year, and all loved one’s are welcome to attend.
