Virginia Bethoney Obituary

Virgina A. Bethoney, age 87, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, MA. She was the daughter of the late Wolfram Levy and Anita Klein. Virginia was born on Monday, May 18, 1936, and grew up in Boston and Brookline with the lights of Fenway Park pouring through her bedroom window as a young girl. She was a Simmons College graduate and went on to earn her master’s degree at Bridgewater State University.

Virgina met her husband Richard at a chess tournament in Cambridge where he began his relentless pursuit of her until she finally succumbed to his brutish charm.  They married in 1958 and started their family. They moved to Brockton in 1964 where they raised their three children. She worked for Brockton Public Schools for over thirty-five years primarily at Winthrop Elementary School. Virgina was an avid walker and lover of the arts, especially the opera. Often when you entered their home the smell of Richard’s cooking and the sounds of her listening to Pavarotti filled the air. She was a voracious reader and often knew the question to every answer while watching Jeopardy nightly. Known as “Sitoo” to her Grandchildren she was a fashionista before the phrase was coined and her favorite past time was shopping.  Virginia loved her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her children Richard Bethoney and his wife Karen from Middleburg, FL, Helen Ward of East Wareham, Maxwell Bethoney and his wife Beth of Taunton, MA. Grandchildren Robert Richard and wife Tracey, Christopher Richard, Kristen Lavallee and husband Jeff, Katherine Bethoney and Sarah Bethoney and 11 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband Richard Bethoney, her grandchildren Richard Bethoney, Caleb Bethoney, Maxwell Bethoney Jr. and her son in law Michael Ward.

A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at a later date.
