Gerald Joseph Hegarty, 88, passed away Wednesday; August 14, 2019 at South Shore Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Facilities.

Born February 4, 1931 in Boston, MA he was the son of the late James I. Hegarty Jr. and the late Margaret Kane Hegarty.  

Gerald resided at South Shore Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Facility in Rockland where he died after a long illness. He worked as a police officer on the Rockland Police Department and also the Norwell Police Department where he retired before moving to San Antonio, Texas. 

He was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he served as a military policeman. He also served in the Korean War where he received the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star and United Nations Service Medal. 

Before moving to Texas, he enjoyed spending time on his boat and could be found many times fishing just outside Plymouth Harbor. He loved a good card game of canasta in his younger years and also enjoyed building model airplanes and boats. He often brought his finished model planes and boats to a local McDonald’s restaurant in San Antonio, Texas and would give them away to the children. He was a true lover of animals and once rescued an injured squirrel which became a household pet. 

He is survived by his daughters: Karen Hegarty of Palm Coast, Fl; Dianne Gentry of Plano, TX; Sheila and Bill Kingman of Halifax, MA and Cheryl McNeil Sprague of Halifax, MA.; grandson, Daniel McNeil of Cocoa Beach, FL; granddaughters; Terri Gentry Green; Jill McNeil of Plymouth, MA; Amy St.Martin of West Roxbury, MA; Jennifer St. Martin of Virginia Beach, VA; Deborah Gentry Wright of Aston, PA; Michelle St. Martin of Wareham, MA; Katelyn McNeil of Halifax, MA; Kimberly Gentry Peoples of Frisco, TX; and 11 great grandchildren; a brother Dennis Hegarty of N.Rotunda West, FL. and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late; James Hegarty of San Antonio, TX; Richard Hegarty of Pompano Beach, FL; Paul Hegarty of Dorchester, MA; Margaret Andersen of Berkley, MA and John Hegarty of Quincy, MA.

 A Military Graveside Service will take place at a later date at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

It was sad to learn of your Dads passing.
I remember the year we drove to San Antonio in that big boat of a Buick he had. RIP
